If you find that your child is still really struggling after a number of efforts at home, there is one final thing you can do. The option of hiring a personal tutor is becoming more popular throughout the States. Personal tutors can help your child get to grips with things they never used to understand and provide a more personal form of education. The personal tutor will become more of a friend to your child, than a teacher, meaning the teaching style will be vastly different to that of their school. It's one of the best ways of helping a struggling child.
Treat math as exciting _ Use bright objects to explain basic concepts of addition and subtraction. This is the nice thing about math. It opens you up to a world of opportunities. I used my floor tiles to explain the concept of area. Apples and other colorful fruits can be used to demonstrate addition and subtraction easily. Fractions are better understood when they can be visualized so use their regular picture puzzles to explain fractions _ they are pieces of a whole so why not? The same thing applies to pieces of apples and oranges. Flash cards and games also spark interest _ some teachers/parents swear by the math smart card games. Download some of the free math worksheets and resources online; some are very creative. I cannot emphasize this enough. The internet has a wealth of fun math resources.
